On August 5, the Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH) announced that it is introducing a Hologram Security Label for registered medical devices, building on a system it has used for pharmaceuticals since 2005. A hologram security label is a physical anti-counterfeiting sticker or seal affixed to the product packaging, similar to those used on currency, passports, or premium product packaging. The program, led by the Medical Device Authority (MDA), aims to help consumers identify legitimately registered devices while cracking down on counterfeit and unregistered products.
The hologram label is designed to strengthen post-market surveillance by improving product traceability and allowing authorities and the public to verify a device’s authenticity. The MOH says the initiative builds on the success of its long-running Farmatag label for medicines and reflects Malaysia’s push to keep its medical device regulatory system aligned with others like Japan, Canada, Australia, and Singapore.
The initiative also aligns with Malaysia’s broader goal of becoming a regional medical device industry hub by 2030. Stronger post-market oversight will boost confidence among healthcare professionals, patients, and industry while encouraging R&D in the medical device sector.
