Myopia, Other Vision Problems Growing Challenges in Asia — Lack of Screening, Treatment Widespread

Fueled by a lack of access to preventative eye care and a dearth of public vision screening programs, myopia, and other ophthalmologic conditions are on the rise in East Asia. In one city in China, a 15-year study completed in 2015 found more than 80% of teenagers were nearsighted. With computer use soaring among young people, failing eyesight at an early age is becoming increasingly common. But treatment for eye diseases is often lacking, with facilities, treatment and diagnostic equipment and ophthalmologists in short supply.
