Japan’s “Regulatory Science Center” Will Drive Next-Gen Treatments

Yoshihiko Hatanaka, the president of the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, stated in a September 2016 meeting that he is hopeful that developments in regulatory science, such as the Regulatory Science Center, will be able to promote innovation for future healthcare.

In June 2015, Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) released the PMDA International Strategic Plan 2015. As part of its vision to make world contributions through regulatory innovation, the PMDA announced the “Regulatory Science Center”, which will be established in 2018. The center will collect electronic data from many sources in order to build a database, organized by product type. Regulatory science data is expected to help next-generation healthcare treatment providers by drafting guidelines for clinical applications of scientific advances.
