Today in the US, generic drugs make up 80% of the market and prescription drugs make up 20% of the market. In Japan, generic drug usage is less than 50%. Due to the rapidly aging Japanese population, healthcare costs are skyrocketing. Increasing generic prescription drug usage will significantly cut costs for the government. Japan is hoping to boost generic drug usage to over 80% by 2020.
