For many years, the Chinese did not believe in organ donation. However, the Chinese organ donation market, which is growing over 30% per year, will be the largest transplant surgery market by 2020. In 2016, over 100,000 new organ donors registered. This increase is almost 100 times more than in 2013. With a huge population, there are around 300,000 patients in China waiting for organ transplantation each year and 1,500 patients are added to the waiting list each month. Even though fewer than 60% of the patients actually receive transplant surgery, this amount is still the second highest in the world today. To overcome the legal and regulatory hurdles in organ transplantation, China has released more than 30 official documents and regulations by the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) and the Red Cross Society of China in recent years. To deal with the skill shortage to do organ transplants, starting this month, a number of Chinese universities will offer training in organ transplantation.
