China’s Health Ministry Pushes for Hospitals to Buy Domestic Medical Devices

China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC), has been announcing plans to boost the development of its domestic medical device industry in recent months. A great part of this effort will be advocating for Chinese hospitals — particularly large, top level hospitals — to use locally made products rather than buying from foreign sources, a move that would hurt overseas medical device companies.

Currently, the market for medical device products supplied to major Chinese hospitals is dominated by foreign companies from the U.S., Europe, and Japan, while domestic Chinese medical device manufacturers mostly supply smaller Chinese hospitals.
