Reimbursement for Pharmaceuticals/Drugs in Korea

The Health Insurance review Agency (HIRA) is the main government entity that determines drug reimbursement in Korea. Starting in 2007, HIRA required applicants to submit a pharmaco-economic (PE) study report as part of the application.

HIRA will determine if reimbursement is possible on a drug and also the final price. Companies can try and negotiate on the price through the National Health Insurance Corporaton (NHIC), which is the government's health insurance financing agency. In general, the NHIC are strongly oriented toward keeping overall medical spending down.
