Reimbursement in Asia
Some of the advanced Asian countries have government reimbursement for medical products. In these systems, hospitals are generally reimbursed in some form for the medical devices and pharmaceuticals/drugs they buy. Therefore, obtaining government reimbursement status for your medical device or drug is key for sales in these countries.
The process of getting a reimbursement price for medical products in the Asian countries varies and is usually complicated. In some cases, the government will try to give your product the same price as others of its kind, regardless of added features or improved efficacy. Getting a good price requires not only having knowledge and experience of the official reimbursement procedures, but also requires understanding the government's healthcare goals and justifying your product in terms of those goals.
Some Asian countries have little or no reimbursement, and the burden of payment is left on the patient or local charities. In these poorer Asian markets, reimbursement policies should develop over time.
