Indian Government Reviewing Medical Device Prices

Due to concern over the rising cost of medical devices, the Indian government has asked all device companies to hand over maximum retail price (MRP) information to India’s drug regulatory agency. According to a recent article in the Economic Times, New Delhi initiated this review after government officials received reports that imported stents were being sold for 3 to 4 times the actual price. In an effort to rein in the price of medical devices throughout India, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority will investigate whether device companies are setting artificially high MRPs in order to boost profits. Given that India imports around 70% of its medical devices, the Indian government is now more closely monitoring device prices to control healthcare costs.
