India Creates New Department to Oversee Pharmaceuticals

The Indian government established a new Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers in July 2008. This new Department will be responsible for matters relating to the NPPA (National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority) such as price control and monitoring, promoting increased R&D and international cooperation in pharmaceutical research, and technical support for dealing with national hazards in the pharmaceutical sector. Other responsibilities include conducting public-private partnerships, exchange of information and technical guidance on all pharmaceutical-related matters and assisting in the planning, development and control of related industries.
